Why the playbook differs
Most squishy sourcing advice assumes a US or EU importer with container volumes. Buyers in South Africa, the Gulf and Latin America often start far smaller, which changes freight mode, minimums and paperwork.
Freight mode decides the economics
Below roughly one cubic metre, air or express is often cheaper in total than LCL sea freight once port fees, customs clearance and delays are counted. Ask for the quote both ways before assuming sea is cheaper.

Minimums for small first orders
Mixed cartons are what make a small first order possible. Instead of hitting a minimum on one design, spread the same quantity across several designs in one carton.
Documents
Commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin cover most destinations. Toy safety documentation requirements vary: the US requires a Children's Product Certificate, the EU requires EN 71 conformity, and many other markets accept either as evidence of testing.
Getting a realistic quote
Tell your supplier the destination city, not just the country, and say whether you have a freight forwarder. Both change the answer materially.
