Are squishies safe?
A well-made squishy is a low-risk toy: a foam, TPR or silicone body with no loose small parts and no water beads, tested to ASTM F963-23 for the US and EN 71 for Europe. The risk comes from shortcuts: water-bead fills, weak seams, parts that pull off, and foam that was not fully cured. The twelve checks below are how a buyer catches those shortcuts on a sample, before an order ships.
Why a checklist beats a promise
Every supplier says their toys are safe. A checklist turns that claim into twelve things you can verify on a sample and write into a purchase order. The twelve below are the ones that actually catch defects.

Checks 1 to 4 — the fill
One, ask in writing what is inside a gel piece. Two, for any contained bead, ask for the expansion test result under 16 CFR 1250.4, in force since 12 March 2026. Three, squeeze near the seam and feel for a hard pocket, which means uneven filler. Four, for foam, compare measured weight against the approved sample; a lighter batch used lighter foam.
Checks 5 to 8 — the body
Five, run a fingernail along the seam; a ridge is a return waiting to happen. Six, pull-test stems, ears and tails, the usual small-parts failures. Seven, smell the piece; a strong chemical odour means insufficient curing, and that is a batch-level reject not a piece-level one. Eight, time the rebound and compare against the approved sample.
Checks 9 to 12 — the paperwork
Nine, ask for the ASTM F963-23 report number and the issuing laboratory. Ten, confirm the report covers this exact design, not only the material. Eleven, check the Children's Product Certificate cites the correct rules and is dated within twelve months. Twelve, confirm the retail pack carries age grading, a tracking label and the choking warning; a missing warning fails customs, not just retail.
Put it in the purchase order
Every check above can be a line in the PO with a pass or fail. Suppliers respect what is written down. A checklist in an email is a preference; a checklist in a PO is a term.
